Nuestra Senora De Atocha
Nuestra Senora De Atocha
Nuestra Senora de Atocha was a part of a fleet that sank
during a 1622 hurricane, just off the coast of the Florida Keys. During
that same time, another ship, the Santa Margarita, also sank. Due to the
lack of technological advances, it was difficult to salvage the ruins
in 55 feet of water. However, slaves were made to dive down, often
fatally, using a bell to see and "breathe." This only worked for most of
the Santa Margarita, but not the Atocha. In the last century, some of
the Atocha was found - - 500 million dollars worth. Experts claim the
part of the ship that holds the most treasure is still missing, so there
is a lot of treasure from the ship left to be recovered.
