10 Foods You Should Never Eat at Night

Remember when you were young and your mom used to tell you not to eat certain foods because they would give you nightmares? Well that may have not been true, but there are definitely foods out there that can cause you to pack on pounds or disrupt your metabolism if you eat them before bedtime. Here are 10 of those foods and the reasons that it’s best to avoid them when you have a late-night craving.

1. Whole Milk

Aside from the fact that you probably shouldn’t be drinking whole milk unless you’re a toddler, because of all the fat, lactose in whole milk will mess up your digestive system and may make you wake up with an upset stomach. And the fact that lactose breaks down into pure sugar isn’t doing your body much good either. When your body metabolizes lactose, it creates a sugar rush that leads to a sugar crash and the munchies. Who wants the munchies at 3am when you have to get sleep?

2. White Rice

White anything these days is a no-no, but white rice is one of the worst kinds of food to eat at night, because like whole milk it metabolizes as sugar, but it also packs your body with a bunch of bad carbs, which as you probably know, are one of the main culprits in weight gain.

3. Pizza

Yeah, we’ve all had that 11pm call to order a pepperoni pizza and watch a bad movie, but try not to heed that call too many times. Pizza is loaded with bad carbs and saturated fat, and when you eat it at night, it will just spike up your blood sugar and increase the fat in your blood, which you will have to burn away in the morning.

4. Chinese Takeout

Another popular late night food that you should definitely avoid. Why? Because Chinese food contains loads of MSG, which is an artificial food additive that spikes your energy levels and makes it difficult for you to sleep. And that’s not even mentioning the amount of fat, sugar, sodium and carbs in a typical Chinese take out. Unless you’re ordering lean chicken breast in a clear sauce with brown rice, don’t eat this kind of food late night.

5. Orange Juice

Millions of people love chugging down some orange juice late night to quench their thirst and to get a sweet taste in their mouth before bed. Well the thing is, orange juice has a high acid content, which isn’t good for you, especially if you’re prone to heartburn. And orange juice from concentrate is loaded with sugar, so you’re going to spike up your blood sugar once again and probably wake up famished, which means you’ll overeat in the morning and throw your metabolism out of whack.

6. Chocolate

Yes, this includes dark chocolate, because snacking on the sweet stuff before you sleep will assault your body with caffeine and how well do you think you’ll sleep with that stimulant coursing through your veins? If you want to nibble on chocolate, do it in the afternoon or before a strenuous workout to kick up your energy level.

7. French Fries

S
When talking French Fries here, we’re referring to the ones you get at a fast food joint that are drowned in that hot oil and taste like a small slice of heaven. But beware of the French Fries at night! They are a high carb food that is saturated with fat and sodium, all of which will just add calories to your body as you sleep, and won’t burn away unless you do something active the minute you wake up.

8. Broccoli

Broccoli is a true wonder of nature and you should eat as much of this wonderful vegetable as your stomach can bear, but just don’t do it late at night. Broccoli is high in fiber, and high-fiber foods take much longer to digest in your system, which means you may feel that broccoli just sitting in your gut for hours after you eat it, especially if you splurged on cheese sauce with your snack.

9. Spicy Salsa

If you’re planning on hitting the all-night Mexican food spot before you turn in at night, you may want to skip the spicy salsa. Spicy food increases the amount of acid in your stomach and often causes bloating and heartburn, especially if you lie down within 30 minutes after eating it.

10. Ice Cream

This may be the number one snack people indulge in late at night or after waking up hungry. Don’t do it! The sugar in ice cream will kick up your blood sugar and rev up your metabolism to such an extent that you may not get back to sleep for an hour or more. Just have one spoonful, satisfy your craving and get to sleep.
